Feature Nonprofit: First Presbyterian Church of Sparta

First Presbyterian Church Feature
The First Presbyterian Church of Sparta is the oldest church in Sussex County still standing on its original site, located at 32 Main Street in Sparta. The church was first known as The First Presbyterian Church in Hardyston and was incorporated November 23, 1786. The original congregation had just 10 members.

First Presbyterian Church Rev. PatrickIn 1812, a school was added on site. Then a fire destroyed the school, and it was replaced in 1860. Their fellowship hall, Pehrson Hall, was built in 1956. The cemetery on site dates back to 1786, when they were first incorporated. Something to note is that the church and cemetery were named a New Jersey State Historical Site in 1981. How cool is that?

The church currently has many worship styles every Sunday morning:

  • At 8:30am, the service follows a traditional Presbyterian model.
  • At 10:50am, worship is a contemporary prayer and praise service, led by a worship team who provides music in which the entire congregation may participate.
  • During the summer, they offer one service at 9:30am which has both traditional hymns and contemporary music.
  • And, Holy Communion is offered on the first Sunday of every month in all services.

And, if you cannot make it to the church for service for any reason, you can watch it live from anywhere! You can also view webcasts of their past services as well. What a great offering to the community!

First Presbyterian Church Sunday SchoolThey also have Sunday School available for your children that starts at 9:40am. There is an online registration form you can fill out or you can contact Geoff Bysshe at 973-579-9841 for more information and to register your kids. They are always in need of volunteers for many of their programs and at the church itself. They have programs such as the Bread & Home Furnishings Ministry, Family Promise and Manna House. They also need help with Meal Preparation, Office Support and their Rummage Sales, and many others.
