Things to Do in New London: Block Island Ferry
Off the tip of Long Island sits Block Island, home to 17 miles of magnificent beaches! Depending on the time of year, the Block Island Ferry will get you there for a day of fun in the sun! It pulls into Old Harbor and, from there, the sky’s the limit! You can leisurely walk the beaches or work on your tan. You can also hike and bike on the many trails here. Want to see a magnificent view? Head over to Mohegan Bluffs. They rise almost 200 feet high! We highly recommend coming back towards the end of the day, also. That way, you can watch the sun go down over Long Island sound! It’s one of the most romantic things to do in New London, CT.
Visit the Submarine Force Library & Museum
If you haven’t noticed yet, New London is a town overflowing with nautical history. Part of that history comes from the submarine base located here. Naval Submarine Base New London is the U.S. Navy’s primary east coast submarine base. (It’s also known as the “Home of the Submarine Force.”) It’s not in New London, though; it’s across the Thames River in Groton, CT. But it’s close enough that making a pit stop there is a must!
Berthed (i.e., parked), there is the mighty USS Nautilus, the first operational nuclear-powered submarine in the world! When you visit, you can go on board and tour the front portion of the sub. (It’s exciting and a bit eerie at the same time.) The sub is only one of the attractions you’ll find at the Submarine Force Library & Museum, though. There are mini-subs on display, as well as several other hands-on, submarine-centric attractions. For the kids, this is one of the most exciting things to do in New London, CT.
Things to Do in New London: Waterfront District
A National Register Historic District, our waterfront is not to be missed! It’s the heart of our creative side in New London. It’s also home to a wide variety of delightful places to see, eat and enjoy your day. Many of the buildings here date back to the 19th century, including the performing arts venues.
Waterfront Park is a perfect spot to relax and watch ferries go down the Thames on sunny days. Then there’s the oldest functioning courthouse in the state, the New London County Courthouse. (The architecture alone makes it worth going for a visit. It was built in 1786!) No matter what you do in our Waterfront District, you’ll be following in the footsteps of some historical figures! Whalers, playwrights, and poets all resided here, as well as the infamous turncoat Benedict Arnold! It’s one of the most history-centric things to do in New London, CT!

When National Geographic magazine says your beach is one of the best in the U.S., that’s pretty big news! That’s precisely what they did, though, when they gave a shout-out to Ocean Beach Park! With soft, sugar-sand, a beautiful boardwalk, and many other amenities, Ocean Beach Park is fantastic! Sure, it’s only hot enough for the beach for about three months, but no biggie. Those three months are some of the best when you live in New London!
