We can’t think of any better charity we would want to run this drive for. Volunteers of America has been around since 1896. Their mission has been to support and empower America’s most vulnerable groups, including at-risk youth, the frail elderly, low-income families, homeless individuals and families, women and children escaping domestic violence, and those seeking affordable housing solutions. See our last blog post here for more on them.

Last Winter we collected over 2,000 items for them and this time we want to collect even more. Just think when you clean out your closets you are really making the room to make a big difference in your community.

Meet Grills Goin’ Wild. Grills Goin’ Wild serves the best barbecue we know of in Lancaster, PA and certainly the best barbecue at a self storage facility in PA. Their menu boasts Lancaster County comfort food, with a twist and you won’t be disappointed. If you are in the mood for a Dirty Roast Beef or even a Flying Pig, they are there for you. But you know what is even better than their food? It’s the story behind the truck.

Grills Goin’ Wild is the creation of Tyler Edmonds and Don Bouder, childhood friends who grew up in New Holland. Tyler is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and is a professional chef. Don is an amateur cook and serious foodie with an MBA and some serious corporate America experience. They both were tired of the corporate world and decided they wanted some adventure, a food on wheels adventure.

Also unique to them is their devotion to fighting cancer. They have breast and melanoma cancer ribbons on their truck and both have had their fair share of dealing with family members stricken with cancer. A portion of their proceeds are donated to various cancer charities.

Looking for something new, fresh and different? Well come n’ get it. Tyler and Don will be ready for you.

We met Insurance Adjusters and exchanged marketing materials as well as distributed goody bags at the various tables.  We also spoke with the Business Development Rep, Mike Oster, for Paul Davis Restoration. Our very own District Manager will also be speaking at a future Realtor’s Seminar about Moove In Self Storage and how Lancaster self storage can help in a situations like these. We highly suggest attending one of their seminars and learning about the dangers of these materials. If you are dealing with any of these issues, we recommend having Paul Davis help you out, and of course if you need self storage in Lancaster to store your belongings we’re here for you.

It is rare to find someone who hasn’t been affected by breast cancer in some way.  We are running this self storage campaign for all of the mothers, sisters, grandmothers, daughters, and even the men out there that get this terrible disease.  We hope we can help in some small way.

Startling Statistics:

• Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. Just under 30% of cancers in women are breast cancers.
• For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer, besides lung cancer.
• About 1 in 8 U.S. women (just under 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.
• Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide.
• In 2011, there were more than 2.6 million breast cancer survivors in the US.

These statistics aren’t meant to scare, just to educate.  Our hope is that everyone woman is inspired to take care of herself and that the community is inspired to become involved in fighting this disease and supporting those affected by it.

The meeting was held at Heritage Hills, which is a great place to host any meeting.  The staff, location and the food is excellent.  The day started off with some Tenant Insurance Training from Bader Insurance.  That was followed by a Health and Wellness speaker who talked about ways to stay healthy, exercise, eat right and stay in balance.

After a healthy lunch the day continued with talks from various home office staff, including the District Manager and Accounting Staff.  This was followed by one of the high points of the afternoon, a state of the industry and state of the company address from John Gilliland, owner of all Moove In Properties and Investment Real Estate Management.

Marketing was the next topic of discussion and was presented by Julie Purcell of Epic Creative.  The employees had a great time talking about campaign ideas, fun videos and ways to really engage their customers and potential customers.

Jay Desai of Macro Advisors presented next.  He had insightful thoughts and great ideas about how to manage personal finances.

However, the highlight of the day was the Awards Ceremony.  It was great to review 2011 and see the pride on everyone’s faces that received a well-deserved self storage award.  Congrats to team members Suzy, Vic, Chris, Jason, Chad, and Peg for all your hard work.   This was followed by a staff cocktail hour, because owner John Gilliland knows how to have an employee meeting with style.   John Gilliland says, “Having meetings like this with all staff present is really important.  We strive to provide the best training to our Managers and it is always great to get everyone together.  It is also a great way to thank our Managers for their hard work.  I always look forward to this.“  Everybody enjoyed getting together for a day of learning, team building, and fun, and we all look forward to the next meeting.

If you are moving furniture around while cleaning you can avoid scuffing your floors by folding and placing two clean towels under each end of the piece of furniture and simple slide it across the floor. Martha Stewart has this and other great tips in her Clever Spring Cleaning Tricks article.

Whether donating items or saving them for a sale, Good Housekeeping suggests to package them now in clearly marked boxes that can be stored until yard sale season starts, or until you have time to visit your local charity drop-off center.

Real Simple has a great checklist for organizing a basement (not a fun chore). Start by assessing the clutter, deciding what to keep, labeling items and installing things like shelving or hooks to store items off of the floor.

Did you know DIY cleaners are easy to make and work great? There are many cleaners you can make on your own with ingredients you may already have. The Mint suggests a great one that can clean tough stains and build up in the shower, combine a ½ cup baking soda, 1/3 cup ammonia, ¼ cup vinegar, and six cups of water in a plastic spray bottle.

It’s also a great time to break open that freezer and start to get rid of those freezer burnt veggies. Bear in mind that anything stored in the freezer for longer than 2-3 months should be tossed as well. You can see all of the Good Housekeeping guide on what to keep, toss or donate here.

Illegal Fireworks.

2,800 pounds of them. We’re not sure what type of event this person was planning but that is a lot of fireworks. Note: Fireworks and anything flammable cannot be stored in a storage unit so don’t get any ideas.

Very Old Seeds.

Archeologists uncovered an ancient storage unit in China, and stumbled upon 3,000 year old seeds, that were still viable and usable. They included almond, melon, millet, grass and other kinds.

Tarbosaurus Skull:

Think Actor Nicholas Cage versus Leonardo DiCaprio, in a war over a very large dinosaur skull. Actors, sheesh.

Never-Released Michael Jackson Tracks.

Never released tracks were found in a storage unit Joe Jackson had abandoned, even including some tracks with Tina Turner. The winning bidder was even able to claim them, since they were abandoned and were from when Michael Jackson was between contracts.

If you have strange things like this, minus the fireworks, store them at our storage units in PA!

Are you a pet owner? We always have a soft spot for those cute furry faces, which is why we have partnered with Pet Pantry of Lancaster County to become one of their distribution centers.

Pet Pantry is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to help keep family pets in their forever homes. They assist pet owners in need of a helping hand keep their family pets by providing temporary assistance to help them feed and care for them.

If you are a pet owner in need of some help for your furry family member please visit their website to view their basic requirements to receive assistance and fill out an application. They will be distributing pet food and supplies on the front parking lot of our self storage Centerville Rd., Lancaster PA location on the following dates:
